At just 28 years old, Angelique Nelson’s life took an unexpected turn. Diagnosed with stage 2B, grade 3 triple-negative breast cancer, she was suddenly thrust into a battle that would test her physically, emotionally, and financially. Now 29, Angelique is still in the midst of treatment, undergoing radiation and immunotherapy with unwavering determination.

Before her diagnosis, Angelique had built stability through a full-time job she had held for over a decade. But cancer disrupted that routine. The demands of treatment and the toll of side effects forced her to reduce her work schedule to just a few days a week. Like so many facing serious illness, she found herself navigating not only a health crisis, but also the harsh reality of lost income and mounting expenses.
Despite these challenges, Angelique has never faced her journey alone. Rooted deeply in her faith, she leans on a strong church community that has supported her through some of her darkest days. From helping her through six months of chemotherapy to standing by her emotionally, her church family has been a constant source of strength. Angelique herself continues to give back, volunteering to feed members of her community even while in treatment.

Her journey, however, has not been without profound personal struggles. Angelique is a two-time suicide attempt survivor and also helps care for her mother, who is in recovery from addiction. Yet even in the face of these layered hardships, she holds tightly to her belief that “with every test, there is a testimony.” That belief has become a cornerstone of her resilience.
When financial pressure began to mount and options felt limited, support arrived at a critical moment. The Allyson Whitney Foundation stepped in, providing Angelique with a grant that helped relieve the immediate burden of bills and rent.
“The foundation helped me tremendously,” Angelique shares. “My back was against the wall, and I didn’t have many options left. They showed up for me not just financially, but emotionally and mentally.”
What stood out most to her was the compassion behind the support. She felt heard, understood, and genuinely cared for—something that made all the difference during such a traumatic time. “Everyone was open to hearing my story and helping however they could. I’ll forever be grateful.”

Through it all, Angelique has drawn strength from reflection and prayer. She reminds herself often that storms are temporary and that joy will come in due season. This perspective has helped her stay grounded and hopeful, even on the hardest days.
Looking ahead, it’s her sense of purpose and possibility that keeps her moving forward. “I know I’m still young, and I have a lot of life left in me,” she says. “This feels like a fresh start—a new beginning.” In many ways, her experience has helped her rediscover herself, her voice, and her purpose.
Angelique is passionate about sharing her story to inspire others. She hopes to show that even in life’s most difficult battles, there is still beauty and meaning to be found. Drawing inspiration from the story of Job, she reflects on how faith can endure through loss, change, and uncertainty.

Her message to others facing similar challenges is both simple and powerful:
“You may have cancer, but cancer does not have you. Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep smiling. Even when the days are long and you feel alone, know that someone is thinking of you. Life is still worth living—make the most of each day.”
Angelique’s journey is one of resilience, faith, and the profound impact of community and support. With organizations like the Allyson Whitney Foundation standing beside individuals like her, hope becomes a little easier to hold onto—and a little brighter to pass on.
