As the Allyson Whitney Foundation continues to expand support and resources for young adult cancer patients, we are thrilled to announce a new partnership that addresses an often-overlooked question for young adults facing cancer: “What are you passionate about?”
Connecting Champions empowers adolescents and young adults to explore careers, pursue post-secondary education, and pursue their passions. Through their research-backed approach, they pair cancer patients and survivors with mentors from their career fields of choice in order to help them accomplish their life goals. The impact of an adolescent or young adult (AYA) cancer diagnosis on life, school, and careers can be long-lasting and life-altering. Treatments can pause a young person’s life and force them to put future goals on hold. Even after recovery, AYA cancer survivors face higher rates of joblessness, lower educational attainment, and reduced quality of life. Cancer affects more than health — it can disrupt an entire life.
Through their virtual mentorship program, Connecting Champions pairs participants aged 8–39 with mentors from over 200 career paths, including art, tech, health care, and a variety of trades. Program staff work with each AYA to develop a personalized curriculum and set achievable goals for their mentoring experience. Participants then meet with their mentors and program staff 1-2 times per month over video.

“I am constantly inspired by the adolescents and young adults I meet and their ability to dream beyond their situation, as well as the amazing volunteer mentors who make those dreams a reality.” Connecting Champions Program Director, Coy Thompson.

This partnership furthers AWF’s mission of shining a light on the unique challenges faced by young adults with cancer. We are proud to provide resources that extend beyond medical care, helping these young people pursue their dreams and become who they always wanted to be — despite a cancer diagnosis.
At the Allyson Whitney Foundation, our mission is to empower and uplift young adults living with rare cancers. By introducing these new relationships and resources, we’re broadening the scope of care and support available to our community — addressing not only physical needs but emotional and spiritual well-being as well.
